Last week, The Only Woman in the Room was published in Korea, with the wonderfully evocative title The Girl from a Parallel Universe (my son now addresses all his emails to “My Mother from Another Planet”). The translation was carried out by some of Korea’s most prominent female scientists, who divided up the book, took time out from their own research, and translated a chapter apiece. Then their organization generously paid to fly me to Korea and spend four wonderful days touring the country, giving lectures, signing books, meeting with students and government officials. My reception couldn’t have been warmer. Although I was dismayed to find out how few girls were in the audience when I spoke to the sophomores and juniors at the high school for gifted young scientists (it’s a boarding school, with very strict entrance exams, strangely reminiscent of Hogwarts), I was thrilled to find that the principal of that school
