I was thrilled to find out that my essay “Pigeons” was just selected by Cheryl Strayed for the Best American Essays 2013 anthology. This was especially gratifying given how many editors initially rejected the essay. I kept submitting it because the contents of the essay mean so much to me, and because the audiences to which I read it seemed to appreciate the piece. So … genuine thanks to Kwame Dawes, editor of Prairie Schooner, for accepting the essay and publishing it (and to Kwame and his staff for choosing the essay for the journal’s Glenna Luschei Prize). Prairie Schooner was one of the very first magazines to publish my fiction … can’t say how grateful I am for all those years of support.
